Research

Most importantly, we focus on the research. Economic concepts that matter aren’t always common sense. You think debt is too high, and there’s a reckoning coming? Or maybe taxes are too low, and they’ll have to go up? Or maybe interest rates are too high, and they’ll inevitably come down? Global geopolitics and climate change? Yep, we’re interested but…

Advice

You may well be right. But we’d suggest, not always for the right reasons. Rarely, in our experience, does a discussion of the issues not make the potential solutions clearer. And all the more so if our contribution is founded on strong fundamental research, state-of-the-art modelling, an understanding of uncertainty, all communicated in simple language that’s designed to inform, not obfuscate.

why choose deer run

Shamik has 40 years experience as a macroeconomist, roughly half in the public sector and half in the private sector. Along the way, he’s been a ringside witness to some of the most important economic events of our times.

Starting as an economic assistant at H.M.Treasury in the mid-1980s, at the height of the Lawson Boom, Shamik moved to Oxford Economic Forecasting in the late 1980s during accession to the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) and the early ‘90s recession. He joined the Bank of England in 1992, just before the UK’s ejection from the ERM, and was immediately asked to run the forecast process in the early days of inflation targeting, ending up managing the Monetary Policy Division in the late 1990s.

Having watched previously untameable inflation fall consistently, he joined Aviva Investors (Morley Fund Management at the time) in 2000, advising fund managers on the enormous shifting global tectonics of the early 2000s.

He co-founded Fathom Consulting in 2004, watching the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008 unfold from the heart of a major hedge fund client. Returning to Aviva Investors in 2009, he advised on terrible GFC ripples, including the euro crises of the early 2010s.

In 2014, he returned to the public sector, joining the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) as Chief Economist. There, he advised three foreign secretaries about the impact of Brexit, pre- and post-referendum, taking a line independent of the Treasury. He also briefed ministers and senior officials on the economics of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, the rise of ISIS, the Greek banking crisis and the election of Donald Trump to the US presidency.

In 2018, he joined BNY Mellon Investment Management (now BNY investments) as Global Chief Economist. There he dealt with fund managers and C-Suite business leaders on the economic and market impact of COVID and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, amongst other things.

Shamik graduated from Oxford University in 1985 with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), and took a Master’s in Economics from Queen Mary College, London (now QMUL) in 1986. He also spent a year as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996.
